My practicum experience was completed at the Substance Abuse measure and preaching Centre (SAPTC) from the period 23rd February 2012 to . SAPTC is located in Caura Hospital but is an arm of the St. Anns Psychiatric Hospital and is staffed and serviced accordingly. This written report will introduce the agency and how it functions and also establish a topic that is founded from a Social Workers perspective based on my experiences there.
Background of Agency
This government agency was founded in 1987and as its physical body suggests, deals in the prevention and treatment for individuals afflicted with the disease of dependance of a substance.
Prevention is done on a restrict basis and takes the form of family teaching sessions. Prevention of other family members and friends is facilitated by family teaching and distribution of literature.
Treatment takes two forms, namely the In Patient Treatment Programme and the Out Patient Treatment Programme. Both programmes are a six-week programme but the In Programme is spent entirely on Ward 2 at the means whereas the Out Programme requires that you appear the centre on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00am to 4:00pm.
Clients are educated roughly addiction (which is the disease being treated), the physical and social set up of substance abuse and dependence, coping mechanisms, spirituality, anger management, recovery and abstinence.
by and by successfully completing either programme, clients are required to attend follow up sessions that provide continuous support and besides education on maintaining a drug free lifestyle. These pigeonholing sessions are basically talk therapy but they allow clients to find out from each other and are used to assist in social integration and group cohesion to the group culture.
